The group from Scottish War Blinded’s Hawkhead Centre have been taking part in the Modelling Paisley project which is part of Renfrewshire Council’s £4.5 million Townscape Heritage Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme 2 (TH.CARS2) and is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Environment Scotland and Renfrewshire Council.
The group have researched, designed and constructed the models in partnership with professional model maker Franki Finch of Finch & Fouracre and have been working on them since the spring.
The four doll’s houses are scale model versions of:
• the Weaver’s Cottage at Sma’ Shot Cottages (c. 1750s)
• 5 George Place (c. 1820s)
• UWS’s Hugh Smiley Nursery Building on Storie Street (1911-12, designed by Craig Barr & Cook Architects)
• the Janitor’s Lodge at Paisley Grammar School (1938-40, designed by James Steel Maitland)
The houses selected are just four examples from a period of development in Paisley’s history, covering nearly 200 years, which left the town with an architectural legacy of national importance.
To help furnish the houses, participants who attend weekly weaving workshops as part of the wider TH.CARS2 programme, have created miniature woven pieces.
The models will be exhibited publicly on the Balcony at Paisley Museum as part of Renfrewshire’s Doors Open Days programme from Thursday 6 to Saturday 8 September with an official opening on Thursday 6 September.
As part of the opening, the TH.CARS2 team also launched the new Four Paisley Architects leaflet, celebrating the works of four Paisley architects; James Donald (1852-1917), Thomas Graham Abercrombie (1862-1926), William Daniel McLennan (1872-1940) and James Steel Maitland (1887-1982).
Leader of Renfrewshire Council, Councillor Iain Nicolson, said: “It’s inspiring to see creative work by our veteran community publicly displayed and I’m sure the participants have learned invaluable skills through this project.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the completed models on display in Paisley Museum this week.”
Modelling Paisley is part of a wider programme of TH.CARS2 activity during Doors Open Days weekend.
The Renfrewshire Doors Open Days programme is available from all Renfrewshire libraries.
