Every week something new appears in the press about Scotland and slavery. How do we react to it? What if our local landowner was involved? How do we find out more?
Come along and find out, through an illustrated talk by Dr. Stuart Nisbet, at Castle Semple Visitor Centre, Lochwinnoch, on Wednesday 27th September at 7pm.
For the past 20 years, Stuart has been one of the leading researchers on Scotland and slavery. Author of Castle Semple Rediscovered, he also contributed to Tom Devine’s Recovering Scotland’s Slavery Past.
Stuart says, ‘Local folk are curious, but how do we find out what happened, in a simple way? Factual history can be hard going. The alternative is to read a story.’
To resolve this, Stuart has just published his first novel, The Book of Here and There. Based on his own personal detective trail, it chases the McDowalls of Castle Semple all the way from Lochwinnoch to the Caribbean.
After the event, Stuart will be signing copies of his new novel.
